Police are urging families, friends and neighbours to make elderly relatives or vulnerable members of the community aware of courier fraud and of the ever-changing nature of these crimes, including the requests for valuable items such as jewellery and the direct messaging of victims through methods such as the use of WhatsApp.
"Courier fraud occurs when people are contacted by people pretending to be police officers or bank officials and convinced into handing over money, valuables or bank cards, which are collected from their home address, often by couriers. The criminals use a variety of different tactics, often claiming that there is a problem with your account and they need your help to catch the real criminals.
"Between February and May this year there were 14 incidents reported in the county [of Suffolk], with around £160,000 stolen. ... "
