We have a few places left on our talk "How to Read a Church",
with Clare Secret at Snape Church on Thursday 14th May
at 4:00pm until 5:30 (but please arrive by 3:45pm).
In anticipation of the upcoming talk, a few of the Benhall & Sternfield History Group members have been, with Clare, visiting churches in the area, where we have been welcomed, often with private show-arounds. What have we been looking at specifically? Porches, windows, different types of font, roods, pews, windows, doors and monuments. It's been a wonderful exploration, as Suffolk churches are so interesting and diverse, each with their own story and rich in history.
We have looked more closely at the churches in Benhall (St Mary's) and Sternfield (St Mary Magdalene), especially as the Group were recently donated several glass plates of Sternfield dating from around the 1930s. These negative images are very delicate on glass, but they provide a unique and fascinating glimpse into Sternfield's past, with several taken inside the church of its font, ceiling and pews.
