ORIGINALLY POSTED ON FRIDAY, 25th JULY 2025 (with subsequent addenda)
—
On 24th July, our website gained an alternative so-called 'domain name' with a ".gov.uk" suffix. In future this will appear at the head of each webpage, instead of the familiar "snapevillage.info" that we've had since 2014 (or even earlier) — some of you may have noticed this change already. However the 'old' name remains perfectly valid and synonymous too. HM Government IT technicians will now be keeping a kindly watching and protective brief for us against scammers/hackers/etc, but full 'admin' and editorial control remains locally with me as Webmaster, and the website itself as ever with Community Action Suffolk. So this name-change merely acknowledges the website's association with (and sponsorship by) our Parish Council, Snape PC.
Most of the "@snapevillage.info" email addresses will be retained — for organisations such as The Friends of Snape Church. However, the Parish Council addresses (only) will shortly be retired in favour of a more restricted set of fresh ones with an "@snape-pc.gov.uk" suffix. This is part of a national initiative to tighten up local government administrative procedures, making them more secure from unwelcome interference, whilst ensuring accountability by discouraging private email address use for official Parish Council business.
ADDENDUM ON 6th AUGUST: CHANGES TO THE 'BLOG BULLETIN' EMAIL
—
I attempted to send out the latest of my 'blog bulletin' emails last Sunday evening (3rd), but my email account was then blocked by Hotmail as "we've detected some activity that violates our Microsoft Services Agreement and have locked your account". They obviously concluded that my email, currently sent to 80 local recipients, might be spam, which quite rightly they are trying to reduce. Naturally, they are especially suspicious of bulk mailings.
Loss of my email account continued for 48 hours until I was able to unlock it again. It is unlikely that this related to the switch to a gov.uk website address, mentioned above — I believe the timing is quite coincidental. However, to avoid further lockouts, I am investigating alternative options, including simplifying the format of the email.
ADDENDUM ON 28th AUGUST: CHANGE OF 'BLOG BULLETIN' SOURCE
—
Having successfully distributed blog bulletins via Gmail on 18th and 26th August, and reverted to the original format (again including a link to the main «News-blog» webpage), I will continue using this new source. If you aren't already on the circulation list, you can find out more by visiting the «How to subscribe to 'blog bulletins'» page.
Kind regards,
Steve Stocks
