Meet Up Mondays is where it all happens in Snape! This is where Maria heard about the difficulties Colin and Derek and Pat had whilst negotiating the overgrown pavements on the way to the Maltings. And Maria, being Maria, set to work!
Andrew Reid (our District Councillor) and Josh (from Suffolk Highways) were her targets, and she lobbied them unmitigatedly from August 2023 onwards until they came out to 'solve the problem' in January 2024. Their solution was to cut back the hedge and measure the clear part of the pavement. “Plenty of room” was the verdict! But, of course, there wasn’t. Happily, Maria never takes “No” for an answer and her next cunning plan was to send Dave off to train for the Community Self Help scheme.
So Dave was trained, the date was set, the weather booked ... — but who would turn up for this mammoth task???
Well, anyone driving along Bridge Road on 22nd February morning might be forgiven for experiencing an attack of FOMO❋, and for making a mental note to check their social media feed as soon as they got home! Because the turn-out was nothing short of spectacular, including 25 GreenSnape volunteers ………!

As you will see from the photos, there were scores of spade-wielding, barrow-trundling, trailer-driving, traffic-stopping, pedestrian-calming Snape residents doing what Snape does best, and putting The World To Rights.
There were many stars of this show and I’ve already mentioned “mover-and-shaker Maria” and “DIY Dave”, but a super special mention must go to the RRT from the Plymouth Brethren. Please look up the Rapid Relief Team online because they were totally brilliant. They provided manpower (which reduced the average age of the volunteers by about 30!), bacon butties, teas and coffees — and a cheerful willingness to undertake anything that was too heavy for us oldies!

Wonderful! Thanks to everyone who made it happen. Our walk to the Maltings is now comfortable. What a difference! — Derek M |
And what was Colin’s reaction to the newly-accessible pavements? “MAGIC!”, he said!
Huge thanks to everyone involved. A very worthwhile project. It just goes to show what a community can do when it pulls together. Well Done, SNAPE!!!
